Washington, D.C. World War II Memorial: Remembering the Cost of Freedom
Located in the National Mall, the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. honors the 16 million members of the U.S. Armed Forces who served, while forever-remembering the 400,000 who died, to preserve the world's freedom. Fifty-six pillars, symbolic of the U.S. states and territories, and two triumphal arches, representing the Pacific and European theaters of fighting, form an inspiring semi-circle around a central fountain. Walk along the plaza walls with engraved scenes of servicemen, then visit the Freedom Wall with its 4,048 gold stars, each representing 100 Americans of the Greatest Generation who died. The phrase "Here We Mark the Price of Freedom" is engraved across the bottom, a sobering reminder of the war's cost.Details
